Introduction to Disability Studies: Origins, Trends, Perspectives
The book has the form of an original textbook, presenting and organizing issues related to the origins, main trends and perspectives of disability studies. The position was adopted that disability is treated as a complex, evolving social, political and cultural phenomenon, and interdisciplinary research on disability should be conducted in a participatory and emancipatory paradigm. This means that disability studies are the culmination of the social and scientific movement of people with disabilities and reflect the interpenetration of activism and scientific activity focused on multifaceted, including intersectional, research of the phenomenon of disability. The genesis of disability studies is presented in two key dimensions, i.e. the activities of the UPIAS organization and the formation of the British social model of disability, and the North American approach related to the activities of the movement for the rights of people with disabilities and the formulation of the assumptions of the minority and cultural model of disability.
The concept of division and terminological explanations proposed by Dan Goodley (2011, 2014, 2017) was adopted as the basis for distinguishing both traditional and new models of disability. Within the framework of traditional models of disability, four key approaches were thus presented: the British social model (social barriers), the North American minority and cultural models, and the Nordic relational model. The four new models are related to the formulation of a critical approach within disability studies, both to undermining some of the assumptions of traditional models and to going beyond the rich countries of Western Europe and North America in the study of disability and the experiences of people with disabilities. New, post-orthodox models of disability studies are Crip Studies, Global South Studies, Critical Studies of Ableism, and Dis/ability Studies.
The third part of the study presents the main trends in contemporary disability studies. Both foreign and Polish studies were used, which fit into a separate subject matter directing theoretical analyses and research on disability. The main criterion for the selection of source texts was not only the marked placement of their authors within a given trend but also their identification with the general theoretical and methodological assumptions of disability studies. Therefore, the following selected trends in contemporary disability studies are presented: anthropological, economic, feminist, educational, Central European, disability justice, and ecological.
The last part focuses on the assumptions of posthumanist disability studies and the connection of their transhumanist aspect with the description of the relationship between disability and technology. In this way, both the latest approaches to the study of the phenomenon of disability and those resulting directly from the description of contemporary issues and current perspectives of disability studies are outlined and presented, with particular emphasis on the growing importance of technology in human life in the mid-third decade of the twenty-first century.
