Humor stanowił przedmiot zainteresowania już od czasów starożytnych. Pierwsi filozofowie, jak Arystoteles, stworzyli postawy pod późniejsze teorie humoru, a kolejni myśliciele przez stulecia starali się zrozumieć fenomen humoru. Przegląd historyczny pozwala zaobserwować ewolucję poglądów na ten temat. Wydaje się również istotny w zrozumieniu jego funkcji zarówno w życiu jednostki, jak i społeczeństwa. Filozofowie, językoznawcy, kulturoznawcy wnieśli istotny wkład w rozumienie tego zjawiska. Także psychologowie, koncentrując się na jego podmiotowych właściwościach, rozwinęli wiele wątków podejmowanych wcześniej przez filozofów. Ich teorie można zaliczyć do pięciu podstawowych grup: inkongruencji, wyższości, uwolnienia napięcia, pobudzenia i odwrócenia. Istotnym zagadnieniem podejmowanym przez psychologów było skoncentrowanie się na różnicach indywidualnych w poczuciu humoru wynikających z cech temperamentalnych i osobowości. Wypływa stąd wniosek, że ludzie różnią się stylami humoru, które mogą mieć charakter adaptacyjny i nieadaptacyjny. Duży wkład w rozumienie zjawiska humoru wnieśli psychologowie społeczni próbujący zrozumieć jego fenomen w życiu społecznym mający wpływ zarówno na jednostkę, kreowanie jej wizerunku, jak i na relacje koleżeńskie, partnerskie czy interakcje wewnątrz- i międzygrupowe .
