Koncepcja badań mieszanych (mixed methods research) zakłada pluralizm metod badawczych, dzięki czemu możliwe jest połączenie ilościowego i jakościowego podejścia do projektowania i realizacji procesu badawczego. Umożliwia to włączenie obu podejść do formułowania pytań i metod badawczych, metod zbierania danych, ich analizy oraz wnioskowania w obrębie jednego badanego przypadku. Cechą wyróżniającą i odróżniającą badanie metodami mieszanymi od badania metodami wielorakimi jest integracja występująca praktycznie w całym procesie badawczym. Efektem takiego podejścia powinna być większa możliwość eksploracji i eksplanacji badanych zjawisk niż w przypadku zastosowania tylko jednej z tych metod. Projekty badawcze metod mieszanych (np. podejście równoległe) należy postrzegać jako ramy wspomagające, ułatwiające organizowanie licznych decyzji metodycznych, które trzeba podejmować na poszczególnych etapach gromadzenia danych, ich analizy i oceny jakości badania. Autorzy, przygotowując monografię, postawili sobie za cel wskazanie odpowiedzi na pytanie − jaki powinien być zakres działań, decyzji w przypadku projektowania i realizacji badania metodami mieszanymi wykorzystującego podejście równoległe? Konsekwencją takiego kierunku przeglądu literatury przedmiotu jest przyjęty układ pracy, odpowiadający poszczególnym etapom procesu badawczego.
