Abstrakt

Walter Burley’s commentary on Aristotle’s De somno et vigilia discusses a number of issues that go beyond explanations of sleep and dreaming. One of these is the role of the brain and the heart in human sense perception. While Burley eventually supports Aristotle’s view that the heart is the organ of the common sense and thus “the principle” of sensory cognition, he finds a cognitive role for the brain, too, even though he also identifies its other “occupations.” The complex scheme of relations between various organs of both the exterior and the interior senses bespeaks medieval scholars’ attention to the physiological aspect of cognition.
