Revitalizing Liberal Democracy Within the Framework of Augustinian Liberalism
(Odnowa demokracji liberalnej w ramach Augustiańskiego liberalizmu)

Abstrakt

W artykule dokonano analizy koncepcji liberalizmu Augustyńskiego oraz jego funkcji jako teologicznego i etycznego wkładu w odnowę demokracji liberalnej. Wychodząc od pasterskiego charakteru myśli etycznej św. Augustyna, autor wskazuje, że nie proponuje ona sztywnego systemu normatywnego, lecz dostarcza wskazań dla ludzkiego dążenia do dobra poprzez właściwie uporządkowaną miłość (caritas). W opozycji do niektórych nurtów współczesnego liberalizmu, które kładą nacisk na proceduralną neutralność i powściągliwość moralną, teologia Augustyńska eksponuje relacyjny i społeczny wymiar ludzkiego istnienia. Caritas jawi się nie tylko jako prywatna cnota, lecz jako centralna orientacja egzystencjalna, oferująca normatywne impulsy wykraczające poza sferę moralności indywidualnej i obejmujące życie społeczne oraz polityczne. Liberalizm Augustyński podejmuje krytyczny, lecz konstruktywny dialog z tendencjami obecnymi we współczesnych demokracjach liberalnych, które skłonne są ujmować wartości takie jak godność, wolność, równość czy sprawiedliwość głównie w kategoriach formalnych norm prawnych lub abstrakcyjnych zasad, nierzadko pozbawionych głębszej wizji ludzkiego spełnienia. Liberalizm Augustyński proponuje perspektywę komplementarną, reinterpretując fundamentalne wartości liberalne w świetle caritas – miłości, która porządkuje relacje międzyludzkie ku dobru. Z tej perspektywy wolność i równość jawią się nie tylko jako indywidualne prawa, lecz również jako wyraz wzajemnej odpowiedzialności oraz wspólnego powołania do budowania sprawiedliwego i pokojowego ładu społecznego. Ujęcie to stanowi konstruktywną alternatywę wobec zarówno postliberalnych, jak i antyliberalnych krytyk, które postulują porzucenie projektu demokracji liberalnej. W przeciwieństwie do ich negacji, liberalizm Augustyński opowiada się za jej wewnętrzną odnową, postulując włączenie personalistycznych i wspólnotowych aspektów, rozwijanych w ramach chrześcijańskiej etyki społecznej, do pluralistycznego i partycypacyjnego porządku politycznego. W ten sposób odświeża on etyczny fundament demokracji liberalnej i usiłuje ocalić jej obietnicę w obliczu współczesnych wyzwań politycznych i kulturowych.
