Abstract
The status of the Recovered Territories, both in propaganda of Polish authorities and in social mentality after the Second World War was ambiguous. The image of indigenous ‘Wild West’, a territory full of dangers, a region unknown and far removed from the centre of the state, sanctioned its provincial character. It is this feature of peculiar separation and distrust which made some of the authors fearful of undertaking activity related to this topic but on the other hand others did so eagerly. The Western Territories as a regular element of the Polish cinematography, became a background for the events related to the specific characteristics of political, social and artistic changes. In the present paper I will recall a movie Rachunek sumienia (‘The Examination of Conscience’) of Julian Dziedzina. This work, completely forgotten today, which was shoot in Szczecin (in various locations) caused quite a stir at the time, especially among a decision-making spheres of the movie industry in the country. This was a case due to the potential of reckoning with Stalinism and pos twar chaos noticed in this movie. The point of reference for its plot was a year 1956 and was based on the book by Ryszard Liskowacki. For the purpose of the present paper I have used an archival materials and the press among other sources.
