Purpose: The aim of the article is to assess the place of artificial intelligence and intelligent management in the assumptions of cohesion policy programs supporting the development of innovation in Poland in 2021-2027. Need for the study: The dimension of innovation evolves with the passage of time and technological progress. In the context of EU programmes, including the tools planned in Poland for 2021-2027, there are still no clear references to artificial intelligence and its clear inclusion in the logic of the designed support instruments. Methodology: The article contains theoretical considerations on the role and nature of innovation in the modern economy, with particular emphasis on artificial intelligence. Next, an analysis was made of the planned support for the sphere R+D+I in Poland in the 2021-2027 budget perspective, with particular emphasis on innovations implemented by the SME sector. Findings: Support for SMEs in the area of R+D+I must assume not only direct assistance to companies, but also complementary support, e.g. for research institutions, and assume complementarity of investments in material resources and human competences. Artificial intelligence is mainly a tool and a carrier of innovation. Practical Implications: Innovations towards Industry 4.0, which are to contribute to increasing the competitiveness of EU companies, must be implemented in a logical and systematic way. Companies will be more willing to reach for aid funds in the area of R+D+I, the greater their knowledge and awareness in this area, and at the same time the greater the effectiveness of the activities of the institutions involved in this process.
