Abstrakt
The article addresses the place of translators in the international circulation of Polish literature. Its point of departure is the situation of Polish literature after the global success of Olga Tokarczuk, when a shift in the status of translation becomes apparent: translators are becoming more visible in institutional, media, and scholarly discourse. The article discusses examples of this change, including translators’ congresses, the activities of the Polish Book Institute, the anthology The Penguin Book of Polish Short Stories, and scholarship on the translations of Tokarczuk’s work. The perspective is then broadened to include popular literature and academic translations of early Polish texts, revealing the diversity of contemporary translational circuits. The key question is methodological: how can the work of translators be described when world-literature studies increasingly focus on institutions, the market, prestige, and mechanisms of textual circulation? The present issue of Rocznik Komparatystyczny is framed as a contribution to this debate, centred on concrete practices of translating Polish literature into foreign languages.
