Abstract

Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is an interdisciplinary framework that allows the identification of complex relationships between language and social context. The aim of the article is to show the research potential of CDA in the context of contemporary communication and digital humanities, taking into account the theoretical assumptions of this program. Explaining how the theory of text underlying CDA resonates with the key mechanisms of digital communication, the article emphasizes the significance of intertextuality and interdiscursivity as essential analytical tools in the context of digital communication analysis, where text and image co-create meanings, and the boundaries between texts and genres become blurred. CDA’s transdisciplinary nature is discussed as well as its role of integrating linguistic, sociological and cultural perspectives in research on communication. The article draws attention to the challenges associated with CDA, especially regarding the allegations of a lack of coherence. It proposes, however, that CDA’s pragmatic and transdisciplinary approach is characterized by scientific rigor, which makes CDA an important part of the contemporary humanities.
