Abstract

In this article, I explore two questions by Radulphus Brito—one from his commentary on Porphyry’s Isagoge and the other from his questions on Aristotle’s De anima— to present Brito’s stance on the possibility of knowing the substance (or essence) through its accidents. In my argument, I focus on the role that Brito ascribes to the internal senses in his explanation of this knowledge. My second aim is to show the links between this discussion and the questions on the accident and the distinctive property (accidens et proprium) as predicables in Brito’s commentary on Porphyry. In conclusion, I offer insights into the semiotic relevance of the discussion.
