Purpose: The aim of this article is to indicate the role of artificial intelligence in local governments, mainly how smart technologies improve city management and communication with residents. Analyzing different applications of AI, it is emphasized how intelligent systems contribute to efficiency, transparency and responsiveness in local management. Need for the study: In the current reality, local governments need to manage resources more effectively, provide public services more efficiently and engage residents in decision-making processes. AI has become a key driver of innovation in smart city initiatives, but there is still a gap in understanding its real applications and impact and adapting it to the needs of residents. Methodology: This article is based on a review of secondary sources, including scientific literature and reports. It also indicates examples of cities that have successfully implemented AI. The study synthesizes the findings from these cases to identify challenges, benefits and barriers to implementing AI technologies. It also presents preliminary results from interviews with local government representatives. Findings: The article identifies key areas in which artificial intelligence has a significant impact on the activities of local governments. The results show that AI significantly improves city governance by optimizing resource allocation, improving public service delivery, and enabling proactive problem-solving. For example, AI-based predictive analytics or communication tools (e.g. chatbots). It also identifies challenges such as data privacy, ethical concerns, and technology readiness, which are key for local governments. Practical Implications: The article provides local governments with practical insights into the benefits and challenges of implementing AI technologies to help them make decisions. It also highlights the importance of developing ethical frameworks and inclusive policies to ensure that AI solutions benefit all citizens equally.
