The subject of the analysis is the theoretical conceptualization of differentiated integration (DI) in the European Union. This scope of research results in their main goal, which is to build the foundations of differentialism, i.e. thought dedicated to differentiated integration, and to develop a set of approaches and concepts to explain the practice of differentiation in the European Union. This task is to help explain the causes and consequences of undertaking differentiated initiatives through different ways of implementing integration strategies by the Member States of the European Union based on their specific preferences, possibilities and circumstances.
Differentialism as a theory of differentiated integration is at the same time its ideological basis, because it assumes a priori that the EU Member States are diverse in terms of historical origin, political structures, economic conditions, cultural traditions and public opinion, but the EU is also diverse in its unity. Differentialism explains the binary ontology of differentiated integration based on divergences, explains flexibility and pragmatism in the integration process, recognizing that a universal approach may not be appropriate for all Member States.
Differentialism at the inception point recognises that not all EU members are willing or able to progress at the same pace, in the same way of implementing requirements or in the same policy areas. Differentiated integration allows for flexibility in the integration process, taking into account the different needs and preferences of Member States.
