Abstract

Attachment Styles and Depressive Symptoms: The Role of Loneliness and Self-Regulation

The aim of the study presented in this monograph was to examine the association between attachment styles and the severity of depressive symptoms in early adulthood, and to identify loneliness and self-regulation as mediating mechanisms in this relationship. The study was conducted in a non-clinical sample of young adults. The analyses included comparisons between attachment styles, correlational relationships, and double mediation models. The results indicate that attachment styles significantly differentiate the level of depressive symptoms, with the strongest associations observed for patterns characterized by high attachment anxiety. Loneliness and deficits in self-regulation were found to jointly form a mechanism explaining the association between attachment styles accounting for approximately 52% of the variance in depression severity. The findings highlight the importance of relational patterns and emotional regulation processes in understanding vulnerability to depressive symptoms in young adults.
