Studia Maritima is a peer-reviewed open access journal dedicated to interdisciplinary research on broadly understood maritime issues.

The annual journal was founded in 1978 by the Committee of Historical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences. It is currently published by the University of Szczecin.

The journal serves as a platform for the exchange of scholarly ideas in the fields of maritime history, maritime economy, maritime law, culture, and literature related to the sea, with a special (though not exclusive) focus on the Baltic Sea region. We publish articles by authors from Poland, Europe, and non-European countries.

We publish original research articles, review papers, and book reviews in areas such as:

  • maritime history and navigation history,
  • ports and coastal cities,
  • coastal communities,
  • maritime law and shipping taxation,
  • maritime economy and logistics,
  • maritime culture and literature,
  • marine environment and climate change.

To ensure the widest possible academic reach, Studia Maritima publishes articles in English. The journal does not charge fees for submission, editorial processing, or publication (diamond open access model).

Studia Maritima is indexed in databases such as DOAJ, ERIH Plus, CEJSH, CEEOL, BazHum, and EBSCO.

Issues are archived by the National Library of Poland, and all publications are freely accessible via the Polona and Academica platforms (i.e., the Digital National Library Polona and the Digital Library of Scientific Publications Academica).

History of the Journal

In 1978, the Committee of Historical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences established an international scholarly journal dedicated to broadly understood maritime issues.

From the beginning, the journal was published in English, German, French, and Russian, aiming to create a platform for the exchange of ideas among researchers studying the history, culture, and economy of coastal regions. The first editor-in-chief was Prof. Maria Bogucka, and the editorial team included representatives from several leading academic centers in Poland, including Gdańsk and Szczecin.

With the dynamic growth of historical research communities in Gdańsk and Szczecin, their role in shaping the journal significantly increased—they became co-publishers of Studia Maritima. During this period, the editors-in-chief were Prof. Edmund Cieślak, followed by Prof. Edward Włodarczyk, who led the editorial work until 2016. Afterwards, Prof. Adam Makowski took over this role. Occasionally, the Pomeranian Academy in Słupsk also contributed to the journal’s development.

Since then, the journal has clearly focused its profile on interdisciplinary research related to maritime history, culture, and economy, with a special emphasis on the Baltic Sea region. Authors from universities located around the Baltic Sea, primarily from Poland, Germany, and Sweden, began to dominate the publication.

From 2011 to 2016, Studia Maritima was published by the Committee of Historical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the University of Szczecin.

Since 2017, the University of Szczecin has been the sole publisher of the journal.
