Abstract

The general characteristic of the present society life is unusual even dynamics, generated by rapid development of science, engineering and technology. This is reflected in the spatial behavior of people and businesses. Changes in the transport structure and volume are conditioned by mobility needs of EU society. Assessment of current and projected future travel behavior is a prerequisite for the creation of an efficient and effective transport system. This article aims to analyze the decisive factors which shaping future trends in travel behavior of EU society. Analysis of the Europeans’ transport behavior allows to capture the current weakness of the transport system in relation to the degree of fulfillment of needs and at the same time to provide a starting point to predict future transport needs of EU society. This article is based on research conducted under the habilitation dissertation and project ORIGAMI (Optimal Regulation and Infrastructure for Ground, Air and Maritime Interfaces ) implemented under the 7th EU Framework Program.
