Abstract

The article focuses on what was most important in the deliberations of the Council of Nicea (325), namely the relation. A fundamental concept, a foundational term that expressed the principle of the co-existence of the Father and the Son, their equality and simultaneous difference in identity, became “relation”. The expression grew to become a metaphysical category. It was clear from the Council’s findings that the Father and the Son possessed the divine nature inseparably-co-eternally, and that the only difference between them was reduced to their differing “relations” to each other: The Father became the Principle-Source of the Son, not vice versa. The distinction the Council made was not purely logical, but supremely real. According to the Council’s teaching, the Father and the Son are one indissoluble divine reality, being at the same time distinct from each other, each – Father and Son – different in their identity. There is a complete interpenetration between them, which the Latin and Greek languages have rendered with the term circumincessio-perichoresis. This interpenetration is not a fusion, an identification, a unification. Consequently, the relationships that take place in the triune God are the model, the model, the source of all other relationships, including those that take place in the world. The world lives, develops, becomes more beautiful – or dislocates spiritually and socially – depending on the nature of the relationships it establishes. This is because the “principle” of the life of the Trinity has at the same time become the principle of the life and development of the world.
