Abstract
The beginning of the 21st century in Poland and Europe has been marked by a decline in the number of priestly vocations, as well as a crisis of confidence in the institutional Church due to revelations of various abuses. This article does not aim to present the reasons for this situation. Rather, it tries to analyse some contemporary approaches to the theology of the ministerial priesthood to see what, if any, contribution it can make to abuse prevention and vocation pastoral care. The selected authors, Etienne Vetö, Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI and Pope Francis, approach the topic in diverse ways, but they are united by their denial of the presbyter's separateness and superiority to the People of God, and by their call for the ordained servants of Christ to be especially radical and humble. This approach both protects against abuse and explicitly takes into account the human frailty of candidates for the priesthood.
