Abstract

Dariusz Bitner's writing and biography may seem of little interest to historians dealing with the last decades of the People's Republic of Poland. The author did not come into conflict with the authorities of the time, he did not publish in “the second culture circuit”, his work was only rarely subject to censorship restrictions. He positioned himself as someone who was interested in literature, not politics, an authoress who stayed away from the bipolar environmental divide that emerged particularly after the imposition of martial law. Nevertheless, Bitner was part of the reality of the time; moreover, years later, in his texts he gave an interesting description of it, revisiting various situations, recalling the disputes and idiosyncrasies of the past. Today, it is an interesting resource for historians trying to better understand the era and cultural politics. Also to authors trying to adapt to the realities in multiple ways. The text is an attempt to reflect on the status of the writer who tried to stay out of politics, but found it difficult to find a relatively safe place in the midst of the historical storm, because politics became everything.
