Abstract

The essay offers an interpretation of the motif of “departure” in Tadeusz Różewicz’s poem Learning to Walk in light of the thought of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Hannah Arendt. The author reflects on the meaning of the word “departed” within the context of the human condition in a world where transcendence is no longer self-evident. This keyword serves as a starting point for considerations of responsibility, solitude, and adulthood in a post-Nietzschean world, where one must find one’s path after the “death of God.” Although Różewicz does not explicitly refer to Arendt, his reflection on Bonhoeffer’s “adult world” resonates with Arendt’s concepts, allowing poetic meditation to merge with theological and philosophical inquiry. The notion of “following” also becomes an important context for the analysis. The essay concludes that “learning to walk is learning a godless and nonreligious liturgy.”
