Abstract

The article presents the life and work of poet and writer Nina Rydzewska (1902–1958). Between 1928 and 1930, she was a member of the literary group Kwadryga. Her novel Aquamarine (1937) won an award in the Jerzy Szarecki Maritime Literature Competition and was translated into French. After World War II, Rydzewska lived in Łódź (1945–1947), Jelenia Góra (1947–1952), and Szczecin (1953–1958). She wrote a socialist realist trilogy called People of Coal (1950–1953). She was the head of the Szczecin branch of the Polish Writers’ Union and worked as a literary editor at Polish Radio Szczecin. Rydzewska’s writing is clearly divided into two parts: before and after the war. Using documents from her literary archive, the article’s author looks at how her writing style changed over time and how political and personal events influenced the language in her work.
