Abstract

The subject of article is the animal-human relationship in the works of Franz Kafka. Two aspects of the phenomenon and its capture are particularly focused on. Firstly, the realistic side of this relationship is discussed, including the coexistence of animals and humans or the attempted insights into animal perception and thinking. On the other side lies the fantastic level with hybrid animal figures and the overplaying of the boundary between humans and animals. The analysis considers both perspectives in the context of a cultural tendency, explicitly commented by Kafka, to view the animal as an embodiment of “free, natural life”. However, Kafka’s texts contradict this notion by consistently associating the transgression of boundaries between species – whether merely rhetorical or actual – with degradation and alienation. The supposed advantages of being an animal prove to be illusory, thereby rendering the burdens of human existence all the more acute.
