Abstract

In her reportages Sibylle Berg questions the perception of ‘exotic places’ and the sense of travelling, which has lost its innocence today in the face of better knowledge about what happens in the world. She builds her aesthetics on a strong contrast between the media appearance and reality, which is depicted in the “postscripta” at the end of each reportage. The grotesque depiction of reality is reinforced by ironic and exaggerated descriptions that emphasise the absurdity of the modern world. In a heartbreaking text about a girl in Bangladesh, however, the irony is abandoned in favour of a direct confrontation with brutal reality. Berg aims to deconstruct the simulacrum of an ideal world and encourages the reader to critically analyse the reality. The method used in the analysis is based on Jean Baudrillard’s theory of the simulacrum, which he presented above all in “Simulacres et Simulation” (1981).
