Pope Francis’ Contribution to the Construction of a “New Humanism”

Abstract
The issue of a change of epoch, raised repeatedly by Pope Francis almost from the beginning of his pontificate, motivates questions about the possibility of identifying fixed elements of reality and such ideas in the light of which past and present can be built a proper, adequate anthropology. It seems that a concept that is still relevant and gives hope for the fusion of postmodern and fluid reality is the “new humanism,” whose proposal for the development can be found in some of the speeches of the Pope from Argentina. The purpose of this article is to analyze selected papal texts in this area, and to outline on this basis the main elements of the development of humanism in modern reality, expressed in the relationship of the new humanism to: the face of Christ, an integral understanding of man, an ethic of care, dialogue, memory, creativity and fertility, universal human fraternity, ecology, education, labor, as well as the qualities of Mediterranean humanism. The survey confirms the main thrust of Francis’ teaching, centered around an integral anthropology based on a Christian perspective of the world.
