Aims and Scope of "Studia Maritima"

Studia Maritima is a peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary scholarly journal devoted to research on maritime issues understood in broad historical, cultural, legal, economic, and literary perspective. The journal aims to provide a forum for  critical scholarly reflection and academic debate on seas, coastlines, and coastal communities, addressed both from regional and global viewpoints.

Although the journal has its roots in research on the history and culture of the Baltic Sea region, this area constitutes an important point of reference rather than a limitation. Studia Maritima welcomes contributions dealing with other seas and oceans, including adopting comparative, transnational and global approaches

The journal publishes original research articles, source-based studies (including critical editions and analyses of primary sources) review articles and book reviews, in particular in hte following areas:

  • maritime history and the history of coastal regions, including political, economic, social, and military dimensions,
  • ports and port cities, as well as identities and dynamics of coastal communities,
  • maritime law, maritime policy and institutional frameworks shaping seafaring and shipping,
  • maritime economy, trade and sea-related economic networks,
  • literature, art, and cultural representations of the sea, in historical and contemporary perspectives,
  • collective memory, maritime heritage, and cultural imaginaries of the sea.

The editorial board places particular emphasis on contributions with a clearly articulated research problem, grounded in solid source analysis and informed by diverse methodolocial approaches. Special value is attached to papers that cross traditional disciplinary boundaries, especially at the intersection of history, sociology, law, economics, cultural studies, and literary studies.

All articles undergo a double-blind peer-review process.

The journal publishes primarily in English, with the explicit aim of participating in and contributing to the international circulation of scholarly research.

The editorial board is committed to maintaning thematic and geographic diversity, a high academic standard of published works, and a strict adherence to principles of publication ethics in accordance with internationally recognized  academic practices.
