Abstract
The proposed Paper addresses the issue of the ministry of confessor to the particular category of penitents, referred to as the "scrupulous". In the first place, we must answer questions regarding the nature of scruples and the concept of the "scrupulous" person in terms of moral theology. Special attention should be given to the so-called "obsession with a deliberate fault." The next step is the attempt to answer the question about the source of scruples. Closely related to this is the existing model of pastoral ministry to the scrupulous. Sacramental confession of the scrupulous plays a special role in this. The Paper presents the nature of the sacrament of confession (clearly distinguished from psychotherapy). Subsequently, the legal rules dealing with the attitude of the confessor and the conclusions drawn from the observation of the attitudes of the scrupulous penitents. These reflections unify the practical considerations regarding the confession of the scrupulous – rules of conduct: the matter of sacramental obedience to the confessor, reference to past confessions, the frequency of confession, the question of the awareness of having sinned, and the problem of a possible referral for treatment.
