Abstract

The following sketch is an attempt to reconstruct Dietrich Bonhoeffer's theological and ethical thought based on Tadeusz Różewicz's poem Learning to Walk. From the theologian's entire oeuvre, the poet selects prison texts that perhaps say the most about humanity as it stares death in the face. The tradition of such texts, from Plato's Socrates to Boethius, is quite extensive, and their importance cannot be overestimated. This seems to be the case with these prison texts as well. Let us note the motifs the poet draws on to explain their source context: the departure of God as distinct from his death, adulthood (Mündikeit), the negativity of the Gospel message ( its maieutics), the imitation of Christ (Nachfolge) and being responsible in a godless world beyond all rhetoric of reward and punishment.
