Abstract

Using the character of Roma Dąbrowska, the protagonist of Zyta Rudzka’s novel Krótka wymiana ognia (A Brief Exchange of Fire), as a case study, this article examines the mechanisms of identity disintegration in late adulthood. The analysis draws on theoretical frameworks from developmental psychology (E. Erikson), psychoanalysis (S. Freud), gender theory (J. Butler), trauma and postmemory studies (M. Hirsch), and the theory of abjection (J. Kristeva). The aim is to explore how cultural, gendered, and generational conditions affect the possibility of constructing a coherent identity narrative in the face of aging, loss, and exclusion.
