Abstract

Parentatio Phillipica secunda. De vita Philippi II, the biography of prince Philip II by Jurga Valentinus Winther, is not only a description of the life of one of the last Pomeranian dukes and a tribute to the deceased ruler but also a kind of tool for legitimising the prince’s power. This goal is achieved by: a combination of well-chosen elements of life of Philip II with the elements of life of his grandfather, Philip I; presentation of the relationship between the ruler and his subjects; presentation of the ruler’s attitude to religion, literature, arts and affairs of state; layout of the presented material and choice of linguistic means. Using the tools of biography, panegyric, parenetics and rhetoric, the author constructs an image of the ideal ruler and at the same time builds a concrete idea of power into which he inscribes his protagonist.
