Abstract

The main purpose of this article is to present the conflict between the father and son in Franz Grillparzer’s "Der arme Spielmann" and Franz Kafka’s "Das Urteil", as well as to attempt a diachronic comparison of these works and to identify elements common to the works of both writers. Furthermore, the question of the impact of a repressive upbringing on an individual's further life, individual development and functioning in society is also relevant here. The basis for the answer to this question is the description of the figure of the domineering father and his son, who is unable to oppose him and gives up the rebellion and the fight for his own life. As a result, the problematic nature of the texts relates to the disturbed relationship between father and son, and the reckoning with the domineering parent who largely determines and even destroys the child’s life. This problem also relates to biographical themes in the works of Grillparzer and Kafka, namely their relationship with the father and the confrontation with his parental authority.
