Abstract

The article examines the depiction of technological solutionism in Theresa Hannig’s novel "Pantopia" (2022). The aim of the analysis is to explore narratives of technological progress and a technologically optimized society in Hannig’s work. In this context, rhetorical and narrative strategies are identified through which the author constructs her vision of the future. Furthermore, it is discussed to what extent the AI-controlled society portrayed in the novel – the world republic of Pantopia – also exhibits dystopian traits. The analysis demonstrates that the boundary between utopia and dystopia is fluid and that technological promises of salvation always entail mechanisms of control as well as a potential loss of human autonomy. Hannig’s vision of the future thus oscillates between salvation and the disenfranchisement of humanity, raising fundamental ethical questions about the role of technology in societal development.
