Aims and scope

«Poland's Demographic Past» presents questions concerning historical populations, including selected groups and social and professional categories. In the micro approach the dominant type of research is the one based on individual statistical material, massive in its character and focused on source criticism. The Journal is open to research that combines historical demography and other (sub)disciplines such as paleodemography, formal demography, social and economic history, history of medicine, historical geography, geography of population, social anthropology, statistics and computer science, in so far as those disciplines enhance insight into demographic processes that took place in the past. The territorial range of PDP contains first of all the areas of the former and present-day Polish state, irrespective of their current or former national status. Yet the Journal is not closed to articles dealing with other areas, especially if they present comparative material or use methodological tools that may be suitable in research on Polish areas. Articles from outside the thematic scope are not considered for publication, although the editorial board may suggest another journal with an adequate profile.

A lot of information on the Journal, first of all on the Polish historical research into various demographic aspects (about 5,000 titles), is to be found in a publication edited by Cezary Kukło and Piotr Guzowski.

Demographic structures

«Poland's Demographic Past» is published as an open access scientific journal. Articles are published under the licence of CC BY-SA (Creative Commons – ShareAlike). Publishing articles in PDP is completely free of costs.

Striving for the highest possible quality of the Journal and for enhancing the quality of the texts that are submitted, the Editorial Staff – after consulting the Scientific Council – decided to publish «Poland's Demographic Past» once a year from 2017 onwards. Some important structural changes were introduced in the 2016 issues. Among other things, in addition to abstracts, which are concise previews of articles, there appeared more extensive summaries containing comprehensive information on the objective of the text, its sources, methods, results and conclusions; in order to be compatible with global standards the Chicago style was used in bibliographic citations.

The Journal is published once a year and indexed in the following bases: Scopus, DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals), EBSCO, ROAD (Directory of Open Access Scholarly Resources), CROSSREF, ERIH PLUS (European Reference Index for the Humanities and Social Sciences), CEEOL (Central and Eastern European Online Library), CEJSH (The Central European Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities), ICI (Index Copernicus International), BazHum i POL-index.Journal has citations in the SCOPUS database. According to the current list of journals of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education a publication in «Poland's Demographic Past » is granted 70 points.

From the very beginning «Poland's Demographic Past» (PDP), a scientific journal, has been connected with the Section of Historical Demography. The Unit has worked within the structure of the Demographic Science Committee of the PAN (Polska Akademia Nauk, Polish Academy of Sciences, PAS). The Journal has been published since 1967. Its first editor-in-chief was Adam Szczypiorski, succeeded by Stanisław Borowski, Egon Vielrose, Irena Gieysztorowa, Julian Karol Janczak, and Marek Górny.
