Abstract

The subject author has focused on relates to the questions of the development of economic thought and economic theory in this discipline and related disciplines in Poland, concerning the scientific perception and view of the seaports as integral components of the domestic transport system and country’s economic environment. The author attempts to determine the main directions of evolution that took place over the last half century within the economic sciences, and in particular in the framework of the transport economics and seaport economics in the area concerning the examination of the key substance and the nature as well as the role and functions of these organisms. The aim of the study presented in the paper is not only to characterize and evaluate the gained scientific achievements which was made in this area in Poland but also to determine the relationship that existed in this period between the theory and practice. In the paper it has been used the method of retrospective analysis and critical analysis of scientific literature and other sources concerning directly the issues of port economic and indirectly port economic and management. Obtained results suggest: 1) the existence of the close relationship between the sphere of research related to the Polish seaports and their development stage (generation) and 2) the strong dominance of scientific centers of Gdansk and Szczecin as major agglomerations and university centers in carrying out this type of research. It should be pointed out that in the era of the development of logistics and global supply chains, the both strongly seaport oriented centers need to take full responsibility for the further evolving of the research of the port sector and its relationship with the regional, national and international environment under the new formula of the seaport economics.
