Abstract

This article attempts to provide a comprehensive biography of Anton Walther (circa 1515– 1557), the first rector of the Ducal Pedagogium in Szczecin and a professor at the universities of Greifswald and Wittenberg. The study primarily relies on academic sources and the gathered material serves as a starting point for potential prosopographical research on the teaching staff of the mentioned institutions. The article is structured into five parts — excluding the introduction — the first part discusses the scholar’s youth in Oberwesel and Wittenberg (up to 1539) and family matters, the second covers his professorship in Greifswald (1539–1542), the third deals with his rectorship in Szczecin (1542–1553), the fourth focuses on his professorship in Wittenberg (1553–1557), and the fifth part explores posthumous commemorations.
