Abstract

Albania, under Enver Hoxha’s rule, was said to be the bloodiest regime in Europe. Without doubt, significant issue for every democratic state is to punish for Communistregime crimes. Nevertheless, lustration process launched by the Democratic Party came under fierce criticism from both local and abroad for its incompatibility with nationaland international laws. The European Union since the political crisis, which took place in 2007, caused by new amended lustration legislation, supports Albania’s efforts towardsstabilisation of democracy. The article performs an analysis of the lustration laws as well as selected activities undertaken by the EU in order to enhance democratic system and rule of law in Albania. It also describes changes made into the judicial system after the fall of Communism.
