Abstract

The paper is comparative analysis and interpretation of two narrative texts: classic short story The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka and Przemiana by Dariusz Bitner, from the volume Bulgulula (1996). The author of the article proves that Dariusz Bitner follows a tradition of high modernism. She refers to texts of two other representatives of this literature movement: Vladimir Nabokov and Włodzimierz Gombrowicz. In both of the analysed short stories, the metaphor of the transformation of a man into an insect (a beetle), which is also a literary image of an identity crisis, plays a key role. The author proves in the article that Dariusz Bitner undertakes an intertextual game with Franz Kafka and presents the issue of human identity in a different way.
