Abstract

The article explores the relationship between Tadeusz Różewicz’s poem nauka chodzenia (learning to walk) and the theology of the Lutheran pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Różewicz adopts two key ideas from Bonhoeffer: the concept of discipleship and the notion of Christian maturation prompted by the departure of God. Theological analysis of their religious-poetic paths employs two categories derived from Protestant theology: fides directa and fides reflecta. In both Bonhoeffer’s and Różewicz’s cases, we observe a transition from unreflective, immediate faith to conscious, reflective faith. For Bonhoeffer, this process led to the concept of religionless Christianity; for Różewicz, to the idea of God’s absence as a result of His departure (though not His death). Both authors move from the idea of God as a necessary hypothesis to God as a person. Różewicz draws on Bonhoeffer’s thought to express his own religious experience.
