Abstract

In her writing, Barbara Skarga usually identifies mass culture with popular culture. The philosopher's critique is radical – it encompasses not individual works but entire genres. In the "appetite of the masses", the author sees a susceptibility to demagogy that threatens European civilisation. Skarga contrasts mass entertainment with the intellectual ethos. In her view, social elites uphold democratic values; they exert an educational influence, fostering good habits and developing a highly artistic culture. The article presents a polemical stance, as the author's diagnosis contrasts with her other, moderate and anti-dogmatic, views.
