Abstract

The article examines the previously unknown French prototype of The Grief of Mary Stuart Leaving France by Maria Wirtemberska – the eighteenth-century apocryphal verses Adieu, plaisant pays de France. It also explores the poem’s relation to Wirtemberska’s biography of Mary Stuart and shows how it harmonizes with the queen’s image in her narration. In conclusion, the article offers remarks on the shared interests of Wirtemberska and earlier pre-Romantic authors, who favored the aesthetics of sentimentalism over romantic frenzy.
