Abstract

The core subject of this article is the analysis and interpretation of Tadeusz Różewicz's (1921-2014) poem Nauka chodzenia (Learning to Walk). Following the successive fragments and contexts of the poem, the author addresses the most important research problems unsolved in previous readings. Thus, he specifies the nature of the Polish poet's inspiration by the work of Dietrich Bonhoeffer with particular reference to his poem Nächtliche Stimmen in Tegel, situates Różewicz's work in the Polish historical-literary tradition, analyses other poems related to Learning to Walk from the volume Wyjście (Exodus, 2004), juxtaposes the poem's pronunciation with Tadeusz Slawek's philosophy of unlearning, and finally explores the semantic dominant feature of the text, which is the theme of silence.
