Abstract
The article addresses the issue of access to social knowledge (self-knowledge) about managed communities by the local government administration and the ability to use it. Based on research and consultancy experience, the authors argue that social research, undertaken and inspired by the self-government administration itself, may be a way to reduce such barriers. The text describes the understanding of social research, shows its usefulness and functionality in the practice of local government management. The article is based on examples of tools and forms of support used in the advisory practice of the Association of Polish Cities for local government units, especially in Local Development Programme. The text includes recommendations for local government units on how to prepare institutionally for the implementation and use of such surveys even by small towns.
