Abstract

The positive impact of seaport enterprises on the local environment can be considered in two ways. The traditional approach stems from the involvement of the human factor (the inhabitants of the port city) in the economic function of seaports. This approach also includes the realisation of tax transfers by port enterprises to the port city budget. The wider context of this impact includes an activity related to voluntary support by port entities the local environment as a part of the implementation of the CSR concept. The aim of the article is to identify in two approaches (traditional and extended) directions of the positive impact of the stevedoring enterprise (reloading and storage enterprise) activities on the local environment of the seaport. In the research study the single case study method was applied. The research subject was the largest stevedoring enterprise operating in the port of Szczecin. The results of the conducted research proved that the impact of stevedoring enterprise on the local environment (Szczecin port city) is substantial, both in the traditional approach related to the impact on the local labour market and local tax transfers as well as in a wider scope, in particular in relations with a higher education institutions (in the area of education and R&D). The research results also indicated that the multidimensional and long-term cooperation of the stevedoring enterprise with institutions operating in the local environment of the seaport becomes an indispensable element of its general activity. In the situation of an increasingly stronger position of employees on the labour market and the shortage of highly qualified personnel as well as the increasing awareness and sensitivity of the society to the negative aspects (external costs) of seaport economic activity, positive activity identified in the research study can in the long perspectives bring measurable benefits to entities involved in it. These include, above all, the benefits associated with improving the image of the RSE as a socially responsible organization and those related to obtaining access to knowledge and a highly qualified workforce (thanks to the development of cooperation with local institutions of higher education).
