Abstract

The aim of the article is to analyze the statements from the Book of Amos advising the Israelites against pilgrimage to Bethel (Am 5,5; 8,14) and the unique phrases used in this book: “the high places of Isaac” (Am 7,9) and the “house of Isaac” (Am 7,16). Used here in parallel to the “sanctuary of Israel” and “Israel, respectively. Diachronic analysis allows us to conclude that a potential historical memory of a pilgrimage to this place can only be found in Am 5,5 (vide Kuntillet ‘Ajrud), unless the mention of Beersheba is considered a later gloss. Similarly, in the next two cases. The statement from Am 7,9 should be considered a later (Deuteronomistic or post-Deuteronomistic) editorial addition. However, in Am 7,16, unless one shares the hypothesis of reinterpreting the tradition from Gen 31–33 in favor of Isaac (vide Adrianus van Selms), the “house of Isaac” can be understood as the “offspring” and the oldest (pre-exilc) sequence: Isaac the forefather (hence “the house”) of Jacob – Israel (vide Gen 46,1–4). However, nothing certain can be said about its historical sources based on this statement.
